Best military backpack for hiking

Seeing as how backpacks are one of the most ubiquitous pieces of everyday carry gear around, it should come as no surprise that there are a ton of sub-categories therein. And while most folks are probably looking for something that fits more in the realm of everyday usage, hiking haulers, or even college-ready bags, there’s another class of person that needs something a bit tougher, more versatile, and ready for anything.

We’re talking, of course, about the tactical and military crowds. Now, you don’t actually have to be active duty or a veteran in order to desire a tactical military backpack, but knowing what that entails will certainly help you understand what to expect out of these bags. Designed for durability, expandability and modularity, and more — the following 12 bags are the best of the best when it comes to tactical military backpacks. And they’re all available to buy right now.

What Makes A Backpack Tactical?

A Question of Purpose

Determining what, exactly, qualifies a piece of gear as being tactical is no easy feat. That’s probably because, while there’s a clear definition for “tactical” (of or relating to military use), there’s not actually any standards in place as set by a governing body or institution. That doesn’t mean you can’t tell what’s tactical and what isn’t, so long as you keep your eyes on a few specific points, as we’ve outlined below.

Material: One of the clearer indicators as to whether something qualifies as being tactical or not is the materials out of which it is made. For reference, there are a number of fabrics used in the construction of backpacks that are widely used by global militaries. In regards to backpacks, the most common material is ballistic nylon — a woven fabric marked by durability, natural water-resistance, and high tensile strength. For nylon to be considered “ballistic,” it has to be made to a specific military standard that denotes its ability to survive hard battlefield usage. If it isn’t specifically denoted as ballistic nylon, that doesn’t immediately disqualify it as being worthy of a tactical designation — but you should perhaps research it a bit to discover if it can stand up to similar types of punishment.

Modularity: One of the clearer indicators of tactical functionality is the inclusion of a MOLLE grid. Widely used by militaries to allow additional modules to be added onto existing carry systems, MOLLE grids are ideal for tactical usage, as they help increase a bag’s versatility. If you need a medkit, you simply attach it to the MOLLE grid. Same goes for some bladed tool sheaths, ammo packs, some flashlights, and more. Because MOLLE is so popular, however, it can sometimes be found on non-tactical items or things that were inspired by tactical gear. Still, it’s a fairly good indicator.

Intended Purpose: It’s not always immediately apparent, but there are many pieces of gear that were originally developed for military use but are now widely available to the civilian population. Often, however, brands are proud of their military heritage and will clearly advertise their offerings as such. If you see a claim on a brand’s site that their gear is specifically used by soldiers, the likelihood is that this is factual. You can always to a quick internet search to be sure, but if a backpack was made for the Navy SEALs, Army, or Marine Corps, then you can bet your bottom dollar that makes it a tactical bag.

5.11 TACTICAL AMP24 BACKPACK

5.11 Tactical has been making excellent budget-friendly military-leaning gear for quite some time now. And that makes them distinctly well-qualified to build tactical military backpacks, like their relatively-new AMP24 series of bags. There’s a lot of features in these bags we’ve come to expect — like a durable nylon construction, plenty of internal storage, hydration bladder compatibility that doubles as laptop storage, etc. — but this bag also has a new feature we really appreciate. It’s called HEXGRID and it’s an alternative take on a MOLLE-style modular attachment grid. And while this one has a 32L capacity, they actually offer a full range of sizes, colors, and styles.

Capacity: 16L, 20L, 25L, 32L, or 40L

As it turns out, they’ve also dipped their toes into the world of carry solutions, as can be observed in their Prophet Backpack. With five different options that range from 18L all the way up to 35L, there’s a size for everyone. On top of that, they also all come with compression straps, modular attachment grids, durable construction materials, stabilizing straps, and internal laptop sleeves. P.D.W. S.H.A.D.O. PACK

Prometheus Design Werx’s lineup of S.H.A.D.O. packs are so superb that, although they’ve been making them for years, they’ve not needed any updates and they remain the only bag the brand presently makes. And that should tell you a lot, considering PDW is still very much at the forefront of constantly crafting excellent military styled gear. Short for Suspension Haul Access Durability Organized, the SHADO is built from durable Cordura nylon, spandex, and ripstop to give it toughness and versatility in any situation. It also carries 24L of gear, has both internal and external modular attachment grids, adheres to a dual-compartment format for organization, and so much more.

SPEC-OPS T.H.E. PACK U.A.P., MC

If you’re going to have the gall to call your company “Spec-Ops,” you had better be able to back up that name with some of the best tactical military gear around. Luckily for this brand, that’s exactly the case. If you can look past the somewhat awkward nomenclature of this particular bag, you’ll come to realize that T.H.E. Ultimate Assault Pack is a powerhouse of a backpack — boasting a 1000D Cordura nylon construction, dual compression straps, a modular attachment grid, hydration bladder compatibility, and more. Perhaps best of all, this superb tactical backpack is made entirely in the USA.

GORUCK GR1 BACKPACK

If we were forced at gunpoint to pick out the best overall backpack of all time, the GORUCK GR1 would absolutely come to mind. The same bag that got this company off their feet and vaulted them into the hearts of the everyday carry and tactical crowds, this backpack has only gotten better with time. And while it looks a bit more subdued than some of the other options, we find that its minimalist styling is more a point of pride than one of pain. Of course, that sleekness still leaves room for a modular exterior grid, your choice of a 21L or 26L capacity, and (of course) the bag’s signature bombproof laptop sleeve. It’s also made in the USA, comes with a lifetime guarantee, and has been tested in the field by actual Special Forces soldiers.

Capacity: 21L or 26L
Exterior Material: 1000D Cordura
Laptop Sleeve: 16″

T.A.D. FAST PACK EDC

Right alongside the GR1 in the conversation for the best overall backpacks, Triple Aught Design’s FAST Pack EDC is absolutely a contender for the top spot. The bigger brother to the award-winning Litespeed, yet still very nimble, this pack shares most of the same features in a slightly bigger format — making it better for those that have a large haul of gear. It also boasts one of the most comprehensive external PALS webbing grids of any bag on this list, it has plenty of storage pouches both inside and out, it’s comfortable to carry thanks to padded straps and a back panel, and so much more. If you need more of a vote of confidence than that, just look at the user reviews on TAD’s site for further confirmation.

KIFARU SHAPE CHARGE BACKPACK

If you’ve never heard of Kifaru International, the likelihood is you’re not a big hunter — as hunting gear is kind of their specialty. As it turns out, that specialty translates beautifully into the creation of some truly exceptional tactical military-style bags. And while you could really close your eyes and point at their catalog and find something worth hauling, we’re partial to the Shape Charge backpack you see here. This particular bag boasts a 33.5L capacity, an external MOLLE modular grid, compression straps, custom sizing (one of Kifaru’s biggest bonuses), five different colorway options, stabilization straps, and a wealth of organizational options.

Capacity: 33.5L
Exterior Material: 500D DWR Nylon
Laptop Sleeve: No

C.D.W. PROJECT T.O.A.D. DRYBAG V_1.5

Though their catalog is woefully small nowadays, Colfax Design Works still manufactures some of the best tactical military carry solutions and accessories around. And the crowning jewel of their present lineup is the Project TOAD DryBag. Available in black, coyote, or camouflage, the hybrid duffel-backpack has a 40L capacity, it’s manufactured entirely in the USA out of waterproof Cordura nylon, it boasts mil-spec webbing and hardware, and it’s completely submersible — meaning you can dunk it in its entirety underwater and none of the gear inside will even get damp. It also features a variety of exterior lash points, a locking buoyancy valve, has removable shoulder straps, etc.

Capacity: 40L
Exterior Material: Waterproof 500D Cordura Nylon
Laptop Sleeve: No

EBERLESTOCK F4 TERMINATOR PACK

Eberlestock is well known for crafting some of the best tactical, military, and hunting gear and accessories around. But their bags are undoubtedly the highlight of their catalog — one that they give quite a bit of well-deserved attention to. In fact, the Terminator pack you see here has gone through four different renovations to become what it is today. As it stands, this is the lightest Terminator pack the brand has ever built — thanks largely to the inclusion of an Intex II aluminum frame which runs all the way around the pack. It also has comprehensive webbing throughout the exterior, tons of internal and external organizational slots and pockets, it can be adjusted to house firearms, and it comes with its own removable rainfall.

Capacity: 67L
Exterior Material: Waterproof 500D Cordura Nylon
Laptop Sleeve: No

MYSTERY RANCH JUMP KOMODO BACKPACK

Mystery Ranch’s Assault Pack is one of the better urban-focused tactical packs around — with its unique triple-zipper format and exceptional building materials. As it turns out, it also happened to be one of the best starting points for the midsized Jump Komodo Backpack you see here. A bit more on the militaristic end of the spectrum, this backpack features PALS webbing on the exterior and inside for MOLLE attachments, smaller internal pockets, hydration slots (yes, plural), and a stowable stabilization belt. For reference, the name absolutely refers to airborne operations and, yes, this bag can handle actual air insertion missions via “Jump-rated Type 7 webbing on all jump connections.” Of course, this tactical military backpack is also made in the USA.

Capacity: 37.5L
Exterior Material: Teflon & PU-Coated 500D Cordura Nylon
Laptop Sleeve: No

ARC’TERYX LEAF ASSAULT PACK

Arc’teryx is already a well-respected outdoor brand, but their LEAF lineup (short for Law Enforcement and Armed Forces) takes things to the next level with unheard-of levels of superb design, durability, versatility, etc. And the crowning jewel of the carry solutions within that lineup is the Assault Pack you see here. Not only is this weatherproof bag built from waterproof Cordura nylon, but it has internal channels for routing communications cables, it is compatible with 3L hydration bladders, there’s a small personal items pocket at the top, and it has internal expansion panels for Velcro packs and additional organizational options. And while all of those features are enough to garner this bag some well-deserved attention, the fact that it is used by actual law enforcement and armed forces personnel essentially solidifies its spot on our list.

Capacity: 30L
Exterior Material: Waterproof 500D Cordura Nylon
Laptop Sleeve: No

MATBOCK MR. DRY 2.0 BACKPACK

The fact that the Matbock Mr. Dry 2.0 is actually used by Navy SEALs should be reason enough to earn it a spot on this list and the respect of everyone reading. Of course, even if the SEALs didn’t even use this bag, it would still be a remarkable specimen for military and tactical usage. Available in a trio of sizes (56, 77, and 122 liters), this hybrid backpack-duffel is available in three different colorways, it’s entirely submersible — meaning you can dunk it up to 150 feet underwater without anything inside getting even a drop on it — it supports usage with the Mystery Ranch NICE frame (the industry standard), and it can be inflated for added buoyancy during waterborne missions and/or adventures. Obviously, this bag is a bit too hefty and expensive to be for everyone, but for those that can afford it, it definitely can’t be beaten.

Capacity: 56L, 77L, or 122L
Exterior Material: Waterproof
Laptop Sleeve: No

Best Military Backpacks

BEST CONCEAL CARRY BACKPACK

Explorer Tactical Gun Concealment Backpack

Explorer Tactical Bag, Olive Drab Green, 20 x 11.50 x 11-Inch

If you’re looking for a conceal carry backpack, then the Explorer Tactical backpack is by far the best option for you. Not only is it exceptionally rugged and durable, but it also features two very large hip belt pockets that are designed to hold pistols.

This means that you can conceal them, but they will also be easily accessible whenever you need them. The hip belt pockets also feature MOLLE panels, meaning that you can attach whatever you want to them. This is great if you have lots of stuff that you need handy during your expeditions, but don’t usually have a place to put them.

You also get MOLLE panels on the front and sides of the backpack, and there are even some attachment points on the shoulder straps. And the shoulder straps have small zippered pockets, which are great for ammo, or anything else you want to have within hand’s reach.

In addition to that, this backpack has a very spacious main compartment, with internal sleeves and pockets for all your EDC gear. You can even carry a laptop inside the dedicated sleeve, as well as all the accessories you might possibly need for it.

This backpack has a total of ten external pockets, and that’s not including the gun pockets and the large compartments. There’s also a sleeve hidden behind the backpanel, which works for either a laptop or a hydration bladder – whatever you find yourself needing the most in your expeditions.

And let’s not forget about the insanely comfortable backpanel. It features really thick padding for premium carrying comfort. But the backpanel is not covered with breathable mesh – only the harness is, and that is pretty much the only downside to the Explorer Tactical backpack I can see.

Pros

  • Conceal carry pockets
  • Hydration bladder ready
  • MOLLE panels on front, sides and back

Cons

  • Ventilation is not great
  • Not entirely waterproof

Product Information

  • Dimensions: 20” x 11.5” x 11”
  • Weight: 5 lbs
  • Material: 600D x 600D polyester

BEST 24-HOUR BACKPACK

5.11 Tactical RUSH24 Military Backpack

5.11 Tactical RUSH24 Military Backpack, Molle Bag Rucksack Pack, 37 Liter Medium, Style 58601, Dark Navy

If you need a daypack, you can’t go wrong with the Rush24. This is a medium-sized military backpack designed to hold everything you could need on 24-hour expeditions. It is made from 1050D Nylon, for excellent durability and tear resistance. The backpack also features water repellent coating, for superb performance even in harsh conditions.

This bag is equipped with self-repairing YKK zippers, which have tactical glove friendly pullers. And it has a total capacity of 37 liters, which is spread over 29 different pockets and compartments. That’s a lot – if you wanted a simple military backpack, then you should probably look at some other options.

But if you wanted a bag that will have a dedicated pocket for everything, then this is an awesome bag for you. In addition to the ridiculous amount of internal and external pockets, the Rush24 pack also features front and side MOLLE panels, as well as a few attachment points on the shoulder straps.

And it is a very comfortable backpack to carry for longer periods of time. The backpanel and the harness both feature really thick padding and breathable mesh, for superb comfort. There’s also a sternum strap that will ensure those shoulder straps stay put so that you’re always able to stay agile.

The backpanel also features a drainage point, which will keep the contents of the bag dry in case of a hydration reservoir disaster. And the side compression straps allow for load stabilization, and they let you tighten up the backpack when it’s not at full capacity. This is great for ensuring that the items inside stay put, but also for making the backpack more firm, so it doesn’t bounce around on your body when you need to move fast.

Pros

  • Front and side MOLLE panels
  • Very rugged, heavy duty and durable
  • Total of 29 different compartments

Cons

  • Pricey
  • No side pockets
  • No hip belt

  • Dimensions: 20” x 12.5” x 8”
  • Weight: 4.2 lbs
  • Material: 1050D Nylon

MOST AFFORDABLE MILITARY BACKPACK

Dunnta Tactical Backpack

Dunnta Tactical Backpack, 3 Day Assault Pack Molle Bug Out Bag 42L Military Backpack for Hiking Camping Trekking Hunting Black

The Dunnta military backpack is a great option for those of you that need a 3 day assault pack, but can’t afford to spend a lot of money. It retails for about $40, which is a great deal for such a rugged backpack.

This bag has two main compartments with multiple internal pockets and sleeves. The bigger compartment features a dedicated laptop sleeve, while the smaller one has an internal organizer panel with slip pockets for a phone and tablet. In addition to that, the backpack also features two zippered pockets on the front panel, for easy organization of even the smallest items.

There’s also plenty of room for the bulky items that can’t fit inside the backpack, thanks to the multiple front and side MOLLE webbing. And the compression straps on the side allow for easy load stabilization, and they let you attach even more big and bulky items to the exterior of the bag.

The Dunnta military backpack is also very comfortable to wear, thanks to the thick padding in the backpanel and harness. The back system is also entirely covered with breathable mesh, for excellent ventilation in hot weather. And the pack is equipped with both a sternum strap and a hip belt that will make you even more comfortable, by transferring the load of the pack onto your hips.

It is also worth mentioning that this tactical backpack has a hidden sleeve behind the backpanel. It is great for hydration reservoirs, or just for any items you want to keep easily accessible and hidden from others. This actually works as a conceal carry compartment, but also as an electronics sleeve. It’s pretty versatile, which makes the assault pack a great option for people with different needs.

Pros

  • Padded and ventilated back system
  • Front and side MOLLE panels
  • Hip belt and sternum strap

Cons

BEST LARGE-CAPACITY MILITARY BACKPACK

MT Military Surplus New Gen ILBE Rucksack

MT Military Army Large Rucksack with Detacheable Tactical Assault Backpack, Hydration Pack, Padded Shoulder Straps and Waist Belt, Internal Metal Frame, for Men, Multicam Camo

If you want a massive tactical backpack for really long expeditions, then the Military ILBE pack is a great option for you. It costs an arm and a leg, but that’s a small price to pay for a backpack that will most likely outlive you.

It is constructed from 1000D nylon, which is the best and most heavy duty material you could ask for. The exterior of the pack has excellent water resistance, while tear and abrasion resistance are off the charts.

This has a total capacity of 70 liters, and a load range that goes up to 100 lbs. And the best thing about it is that the back system is so well made that you won’t even feel those 100 lbs on your back. The backpanel and shoulder straps both feature thick padding and breathable mesh for excellent carrying comfort, and everything about the harness is adjustable. Getting the pack to fit you perfectly will be very easy.

One thing I love about this military backpack is that it features a detachable daypack. This is particularly useful for long expeditions – some days you will want to go on a quick hike outside the camp, but without carrying a 70-liter backpack on your shoulders. With the detachable daypack, you can only take the essentials with you, and leave all the heavy stuff at camp.

Additionally, both the daypack and the big backpack body feature multiple MOLLE webbing panels on the front and sides, so you can have all the bulky stuff easily accessible. And there are loads of internal and external compartments on both packs, for easy organization of all your belongings.

Pros

  • Detachable daypack included
  • Comes with a hydration reservoir
  • Extremely durable and rugged

Cons

  • Very expensive
  • Heavy and bulky

SERGEANT Military Tactical Backpack

SERGEANT Military Tactical Backpack, 1050D Ballistic Nylon, YKK Zippers, UTX Buckles, Molle. 35L 1-Day, Small Size, Assault Pack, Bug Out Bag, Rucksack, Daypack, Range, Camping, Hiking, Hunting.

The Sergeant military backpack is a great mid-range option. It’s not a cheap pack, but it is not very expensive either, and it performs remarkably well for the price. This backpack is made from 1050D ballistic nylon, for excellent durability, tear and water resistance.

The hardware on the bag is also top quality – it features self-repairing YKK zippers and heavy duty UTX buckles. In addition to that, this pack also has several MOLLE webbing panels on the front and sides, all of which are triple stitched onto the bag. This pretty much guarantees that they will stay put, no matter how many ridiculously heavy items you attach to them.

This backpack has one roomy main compartment with a padded laptop sleeve, and a secondary front compartment with an internal MOLLE webbing. There’s also a hidden hydration compartment behind the backpanel, as well as two smaller zippered pockets on the front. Overall, it should be really easy to keep your gear organized in this backpack, thanks to the abundance of internal and external pockets.

The bag even features stretchy water bottle pockets on the sides, which is pretty cool. This feature is often lacking on bags that have MOLLE webbing panels on the sides, which makes the Sergeant quite a unique backpack. And a very versatile bag with a 35-liter capacity.

It is also a comfortable backpack to wear, what with the internal frame and thick padding in the backpanel. The shoulder straps are covered with breathable mesh for great ventilation, and the pack features a sternum strap and a hip belt that ensure it will stay in place. The only downside is that the backpanel itself is not ventilated, but that shouldn’t be a huge problem.https://454058164631f5b1883362d4897fba32.safeframe.googlesyndication.com/safeframe/1-0-38/html/container.html

CamelBak BFM Mil Spec Antidote Hydration Backpack

CAMELBAK BFM Mil Spec Antidote Hydration Backpack Coyote 62593

If you want a backpack that military personnel actually wears, the CamelBak BFM pack is the one to get. It is a very rugged outdoor bag designed for the army, so you know to expect a lot from it. And you won’t be disappointed; this backpack is made from premium materials, it has excellent water resistance, tear resistance and it is very durable.

It’s also a very roomy tactical backpack, with a total capacity of 51 liters. That includes both the cargo and hydration capacities; it’s also worth mentioning that this backpack was designed specifically around CamelBak’s Antidote reservoir, which is included in the purchase of the pack. CamelBak reservoirs tend to be pretty pricey, so this actually means much better value for money than you’d initially think – especially considering that this isn’t at all a cheap bag.

The reservoir has a capacity of three liters, and it has its own dedicated compartment with a pass-through hole for the hose. It’s also important to mention that you can easily set up one-handed hydration with this pack – just secure the hose to the shoulder strap, and that’s it.

This pack features a very spacious main compartment with internal pockets, two zippered pockets on each side, and two smaller front compartments. There’s a laser cut MOLLE webbing panel on the front of the bag, as well as a thick Velcro strip. And of course, there’s also the dedicated hydration pocket, which is hidden just behind the backpanel.

This is also a very comfortable backpack to wear, thanks to the extra thick padding in the backpanel. The shoulder straps and the hip belt are also padded, and they’re very wide – this allows for a more comfortable fit, and really ensures that you barely even feel this on your back.

  • Hydration reservoir included
  • Laser cut MOLLE panel
  • Very durable exterior

Cons

  • Pricey
  • No breathable mesh on backpanel

The Tacticon 24BattlePack is another great mid-range option. It’s not a very expensive backpack, so it’s perfect for all of you that want something rugged and durable, but can’t afford to spend a lot of money.

This is a very versatile bag – it has quite a lot of different pockets and compartments, so it’s a great option regardless of what exactly you’re looking to carry in it. The main compartment features a 17” laptop sleeve, while the front compartment has a universal gun holster. And there’s even an insulated hydration compartment behind the backpanel, with a hole for the hose.

The backpanel is actually one of the best things about this pack – it features very thick padding, and it is entirely covered by breathable mesh, for excellent carrying comfort. The same goes for the shoulder straps, which also feature a sternum strap that will keep them in place. And with the convenient hip belt, you won’t even feel the entire weight of this bag on your shoulders!

The Tacticon tactical backpack features five compartments total, including the dedicated hydration pocket. There are the main compartment, the front compartment and two smaller zippered pockets on the front panel. That’s more than enough space for all your EDC items, especially with all the internal pockets as well!

And the backpack is equipped with multiple MOLLE panels, for easy carrying of all those bulky items. There are attachment points on the front and sides of the backpack, while the shoulder straps also feature convenient D-rings.
