Eating with Parkinsons is Not as easy as it seems, I understand that. I have been eating with parkinsons for some time. So I set out to find the best utensil to use and tell others about it so they can be as satisfied with their choice as I am.

Parkinson’s disease is an illness that affects how a person walks, moves and even how they talk. One of the symptoms of Parkinson’s disease is hand tremors. This can make eating and drinking nearly impossible at times. Fortunately, there are many adaptive equipment products that can help make eating easier and reduce the risk of choking.

Best eating utensils for parkinsons patients

Utensils can be very helpful for people who have tremors. I especially like spoons with the ‘pointer’ part on the end, it makes it easier to reach the food. I bought a spoon cover that looks like a cup. It has handles on each side and you can grasp them with your fingers rather than having to use your hands to hold it steady while you take a bite.

There is a vast array of adaptive eating utensils to accommodate almost every kind of disability or hand tremor. The tines on the regular spoon are too far apart and patients with dysautonomia, particularly POTS patients, don’t want their food anywhere near their hands. There are some spoons out there with a built in scoop-like shape that hold more than the standard ½ cup volume of liquid. These are made of either soft plastic or silicone. A scoop is also a handy tool for helping spoon feed those who need assistance but are capable of swallowing on their own.

Parkinson’s disease is a disorder of the nervous system that affects movement. One of the symptoms people with Parkinson’s may experience is hand tremors. This can make it difficult to get tea into a cup and onto your spoon as you attempt to drink it from a cup. It can be frustrating when every second counts and you’re trying to get tea down your throat.
